Class Descriptions

Acro Yoga

--- AcroYoga is a practice that blends the wisdom of yoga with basic partner acrobatics, physical conditioning, and basic thai massage techniques. The practice is inspired by AcroYoga, Circus Yoga, and the Universal Principles of Alignment from Anusara Yoga. AcroYoga is designed to increase strength, flexibility, coordination, and sensitivity in a safe and progressive way. For safety, spotters are always used in acrobatic sequences. The highest aim of AcroYoga is to create an environment that cultivates trust, connection, and playfulness. By practicing asana and partner acrobatics we prepare ourselves both physically and energetically for interacting harmoniously with others. Bring a friend or come by yourself, no partner is required!



Aerial Yoga

--- Enjoy the benefits of inversion and develop flexibility and strength with Aerial Yoga.
Slings made from the silky fabric aerialists use in performance are rigged from single points in the ceiling. Students begin with a warm-up on the floor. Ground poses are then translated into aerial positions and sequences.  Aerial yoga, though new and somewhat experimental, is increasing in popularity.  Students benefit from the extra stretch the fabric provides and relish in the effects of gravity. Take advantage of the only aerial yoga class in the city! 


Anusara Yoga

--- In Sanskrit, Anusara means “flowing with the currents of grace.” Tapping into that universal flow, this class weaves together alignment and the biomechanics of the body with a playful application of yogic philosophy, so that every pose expresses our intention from the inside out. When we embrace opposites concurrently, we are able to bring about refined balance: between stability and freedom, effort and surrender, giving and receiving. It is through this union of the yoga practice that our outer body and our inner landscape begin to coalesce, making every practice a gift of the heart and a celebratory offering to others. Ashtanga 1/2 Primary Series

--- Asthanga yoga 1/2 primary led class is suitable for anyone. You"ll benefit from getting a strong back and firm arms and legs.You"ll learn to flow from one posture to the next slowly synchronizing your breath and eye gaze as instructed. At the end of class your body may be a little tired for a while yet your mind more focused for the rest of the day. 



Beginners

--- Study the fundamentals of yoga from the feet up! Beginner's classes welcome those who have never studied yoga before, those beginning again, those with special needs, and those who enjoy delving into the foundation of their practice.




Belly Dance

--- Belly Dance Goddess Hour (All levels, from beginner to advanced) In this Belly Dance class students will be introduced to the world of belly dance and learn and build on the basic foundational moves. Class structure includes warm ups, clear movement breakdowns, drills and integration of movements through short dance combinations, skill building exercises & education in dance theory. We close each class with a relaxing yoga cool down. Although strict choreography is not taught, sequences & performing /stage dynamics will be taught. We focus on technique, control, and strength while increasing mobility, flexibility, and balance. This Belly Dance class is a celebration... of life, femininity, and an opportunity to awaken your inner goddess. Primarily, each student is encouraged to find their own unique flow/field of energy and discover their own rhythm within the dance. Students learn individual movements and then experiment with layering these for a richer dancing experience.

--- Come experience the world of Belly Dance. No dance experience necessary. Yoga attire is best. Stretch and fitted tank or t-shirt works great. However, anything that allows a full range of motion is okay. You are welcome to bring your own hip scarf. Hip scarves are available in class, you may borrow a scarf or purchase one from instructor if you prefer. Pregnant:? We welcome all women in class. If you are pregnant, please notify your instruction for adaptations to movements to promote safety and comfort. Bhakti Breakfast Club

--- The Bhakti Breakfast Club includes short dharma talk on Bhakti Yoga from such inspirations as the Bhagava Gita, Bhagavatam or Bhakti Sutras; invitations & open discussions on Seva, the art of selfless service, a key component of being a Bhakta. Learn new chants & heart purifications. 40 minutes straight of mantra singing, chanting the sacred words, prayers and loves songs. No experience with voice is needed. This is for means of attracting all that is Divine & ecstatic . Basic technique practice of harmonium & sargam scale will be offered if interested. If you have a harmonium, bring it!



Break the Chains: The Infinite Meditation


10 minute dharma discussion.
10 minute (108 rounds) of oral vedic mantra recitation.
40 minute silent (partially lead) group meditation.

--- Break through bad habits, worry, weakness, stagnation & anxiousness. Settle the nervous system & logical mind, getting into the Wisdom/Heart Mind. Challenge yourself to 8 (the number of the Infinite) meditations in a row without skipping a day of the conscious building cycle together as a group. No experience or expertise necessary. Please bring 1 set of malas (prayer beads) with the number 108 on them. We will be using our malas. Inquire within. Free your mind and the rest will follow.

Community Swan

--- The word "prema" in sanskrit is the word for the Ultimate love. It is a combination of every aspect of love you can possibly imagine in one word. Typically, there are numerous words for love in sanskrit, in fact, Sanskrit has the most variety of words for the word love out of any other language. This word ties them all together, be it brotherly, romantic, family, or humanitarian. The word Suprema is a play off of this, after John Coltraine's epic album "A love Supreme" with the song OM in it. The first Jazz song of it's caliber to go avant garde into the Sanskrit world.



Dharma

--- Join us for an informal philosophy gathering. Beginning in summer 2013, we will study a Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life through the teachings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and others. This marvelous book, both profound and funny, was written in poetic verse by Master Shantideva in the 8th century. The book focuses on what it means to become a bodhisattva, or how to use one's precious human life to serve others. All are welcome at any point, no previous study necessary. Jivamukti Yoga

Whether you're a beginner, deciphering the difference between vrksasana (tree) and sirshasana (headstand) or an advanced yogi who can put both feet behind their head, the Jivamukti Open class welcomes you, as it is open to practitioners of all levels.
You work at your own pace, following the teacher's verbal as well as hands-on guidance. Asana options will be provided for beginners, intermediate and advanced students.

A typical Open class incorporates the five tenets of Jivamukti Yoga:

shastra (scripture)
bhakti (devotion)
ahimsa (kindness)
nada (music)
dhyana (meditation)
An Open class presents classical yoga teachings as relevant to one’s life on and off the mat, drawn from the Focus of the Month essay, supported by chanting, breath awareness, flowing vinyasa sequences, alignment exploration, hands-on assistance, relaxation and meditation. All Open classes include 14 points—asanas, meditation and spiritual teachings—in a sequence creatively designed by the teacher. Exuberant, eclectic music plays an integral role: you might practice to a shifting soundtrack of ragas, global trance, hip-hop, spoken word, George Harrison, Sting, Krishna Das, Donna de Lory, Michael Franti, Bill Laswell, Alice Coltrane and Mozart.

The class is called “Open” because it is open and suitable to all levels of practitioner. Even so, beginning level students should know that there will not be much detailed “how to do” descriptions; for that a student is advised to attend a Basic or Beginner's class.




Kirtan

--- Call and response chanting to open up the subtle energy centers of the body so that we “lighten up”. Kirtan is a connection of community and the art of life. We tune in and connect with others, refining our listening, communication skills and vibration, both inner and outer. It is a perfect balance of receiving, or listening, and sharing, singing with honest emotion. In addition, each Kirtan will be catered with vegetarian food and accompanied by musicians. You are welcome to come and go as you want as we rock out!


Kundalini

--- Kundalini Yoga uses sound (mantra), movement (kriya's), breath (pranayam),  relaxation and mediation to balance and strengthen your physical, emotional and spiritual essences.  This yoga technique offers away to combat the day to day stress by organizing, supporting and nourishing various systems in the body (glandular, elimination, Nervous, ect.).  Many of the classes focus on bring balance to the glandular and immune systems to provide healing and therapeutic benefits to the nervous system.  It works on subtle levels to provide profound effects.  Ultimately, it is vehicle to uncover your true self to live soulful, healthy and happy.  It is often refereed to as a "Yoga of Awareness".



Meditation

--- Raja Yoga, the yoga of concentration invites stillness and spaciousness within our lives. It is a direct form of knowledge of the Self, as we have the chance to step back, and to take the seat of the witness, less wrapped up or bound by our actions or our lives. This invites the awareness of our True identity. From this perspective, decisions, and actions in thoughts, words, and deeds become clear. A group setting is a powerful form of inspiring magnetic consciousness.



Pre-Natal Yoga

--- For all Moms to be, regardless of your yoga experience. This class is safe and accommodating to all months of pregnancy, and is a precious preparation for proper breathing, hip opening, and lower spine and sciatic relief, soothing nerves, and emotional balance for the growing months of pregnancy. It is a quality time to meet other mothers to be, and to access and maintain a center of maternal serenity for being a skillful, loving parent.



Quick Flow
on the Go

--- Designed for those with a full life style, this unique, compressed class will still include all of the components of a Swan River Yoga class. More rigorous in it's design, the opening talk and chant will be condensed, and spread throughout the language of the class. For timing, the alignment instruction will be less emphasized, yet one will still leave feeling whole in their spiritual work out. Reiki and Energy Clearing

--- Michele Baker, a level III Reiki Master, has done extensive work with energy clearing, mystical yoga techniques, visualization, and medicinal herbs to assist her in clearing the Chakras, the subtle Anatomy of the body. She is now offering private sessions for this blend of energy healing. In a session, you will do some pranayama and mantra to clear your inner rivers, and then lie down in restorative yoga poses, where Michele will then use different healing tools of smudging, aromatherapy, sound mantra therapy, and direct visualization to read your chakras and finely tune them.  Reiki will also be implimented, where Michele will call upon the chi/prana/reiki to flow with the guidance of the Reiki, Yoga, and Shamanic lineage of Spirit. You will leave a Chakra Tuning Session feeling very refreshed, nurtured, and clear, and will often receive speficic messages about the source of certain blockages in the body, which eventually lead to being the primary causes of disharmony and disease if not addressed. Get to the source and transform the seeds, for a clearing on all of the koshic levels.

Restorative Yoga

--- Inspired from the Iyengar tradition, this class is suitable for all in need of healing, acceptance, and the desire to let go. The use of props such as bolsters, blankets, chairs and straps is used to gently ease one into opening the energy over an extended period of time. A few poses will be introduced in each class, infusedwith the possibility of Pranayama (breathing exercises), Kirtan ( call and responsechanting) to open the subtle energy centers in the body, and guided Meditation, invoking stillness and spaciousness. Created especially for beginners, injuries, special needs, high doses of change, and trauma. Restorative yoga is done seated or lying down. No standing sequences are offered. Renew and restore.

Sound Bath

--- Soak into sweet songs, with the aid of sacred instruments for orchestration and a sound reality. Mantra and voice will also sooth the soul. Feel the vibration of a primordial gong. Its frequency is equivalent to the origin of our mind. It resonates the seed of all things, the bindu, clearing our nervous system and shattering through deeper layers of our being to a primal, celestial, and familiar place. Enjoy being placed into Restorative Yoga poses and given a Thai Yoga Adjustment or Assist in the pose. You will rest in restorative yoga poses with the use of bolsters, blankets, and blocks.

--- Tapasya is translated as "voluntary challenge, struggle discipline or hardship." This is a community class meant to warm, move & spice the community up! If ever you are craving a challenge; a way to move, release, learn, grow & discover new or challenging poses you may not have the courage to do, or is not offered in a regular, open class, this is the class for you. This is a STRONG, vigorous class that will flow steadily with more adventurous variations. Spice up your life. Offer your challenges to a greater goal.

Thai Yoga Therapy

--- Thai Massage is an ancient healing art that uses gentle streches and acupressure tomaintain health within the body by clearing meridians or energy passage ways . It is a magical experience received on a padded mat, while fully clothed.
The purpose of this class is to reconnect Thai Massage with its roots in Yoga in a practical way that can build community and teach each of us how to access the healing power that exists within. We will explore ways to keep the body clear so energy may move freely, using ancient yogic knowledge and Thai massage postures. We will learn how to expand our energy so fully that all we can do with the over flow is to give forth, create, heal, uplift and inspire all those around us. We will learn Thai massage postures, in a give / receive exchange, both valuable lessons to keep energy flowing. This class will provide you with the skills necessary to give a full body Thai massage to your friends, family and loved ones.
